Performance Charts

Q:  Where can I find performance charts for your pumps?

Q:What type of pump should I use?
A: There are a few questions you should ask yourself in order to determine what kind of pump you need for your application:** Will you have fish or plant life?** Do you want still or running water?** Will you have a waterfall?** Will you have any water features?

Each of these answers will help determine what kind of pump you need -- mag drive, aluminum, epoxy encapsulated, stainless steel and bronze, or waterfall pumps.

Use our pump selector to find just the right pump for your custom application.

Q:What size pump do I need?
A: Cal Pumps are rated by the flow rate measured in GPH, or gallons per hour, and the vertical lift also known as dynamic head. In order to size your pump you need to determine how many gallons per hour you want to push at a certain height.

For instance, you might have a waterfall that is 5 feet high and flows at 600 GPH. You would need a pump that will push 600 GPH at 5 feet. Cal Pumps are rated at 1 foot of vertical head. You should check the performance chart for each pump in order to find the one that best suits your application.

Use our pump selector to find just the right pump for your custom application.

Q:How often do I need to circulate my pond?
A: Your pond should be circulated once every two hours. If you have a 500 gallon pond, you will need a 250 GPH pump.

Q:Is it safe to place the pump in water?
A: SAFETY - Never play with electricity! You, our valued customer, take for granted that we have built every possible safety precaution into our pumps, and we have. We go to incredible lengths to ensure that every component in every pump exceeds the safety standards of our industry. But we cannot prevent a dog from chewing through the power cord, lightning strikes, voltage surges in the power lines or the inevitable deterioration caused by normal usage. What we can do is recommend that you always install a ground fault circuit interrupter known as a GFI or GFCI whenever any electrical product is used around water. In most of your communities, building codes require a GFCI. However, if your home was built over 10 years ago, it may not be equipped with GFCI’s. You can purchase a GFCI at any hardware store, home center, or electrical supply shop. They are inexpensive and easy to install. Ensure that you, your children, and your pets are safe from any potential harm. Always use a GFCI!

Q:How do I keep my pond clean?
A: There are several different products that will aid in keeping your pond clean.** Skimmers help to rid your pond of organic debris, such as, leaves and twigs. ** Mechanical filters help to keep debris from getting in to the pump. ** CPS Biological filters are designed to aid in the ecological balance of the water allowing beneficial bacteria to grow. Beneficial bacteria colonize inside the filter and help to convert nitrites to nitrates that are food or aquatic plants.

Q:What can I do about Green water?
A: Algae blooms in the Spring when the water temperature rises above 55 degrees. Algae feeds on waste and organic debris in the pond. Cal Pump offers a full line of U.V.Clarifiers to give you the best possible water clarity.

Q:What size liner should I use?
A: Use the following formula to determine liner size:
Liner width =Maximum Pond Surface Width + (2 x Pond Depth) + (2 x 1’ Border).
Required Liner Length = Maximum Pond Surface Length + (2x Pond Depth) + (2 x 1’ Border).

Use our pond liner calculator to determine the right size for your custom application.

Q:My pump turns on and off for no apparent reason. What's wrong?
A: All Cal Pumps are protected by a thermal overload that will shut the pump off if it begins to operate too hot. If this is happening it is likely that the seawater strainer has become clogged with debris. Cleaning the strainer should restore full flow of water to the pump and solve the problem.
